Bands are rings of surgical stainless steel that are fitted to the teeth by the force of the patient's bite. They
are initially sized by finger pressure.

Then a "bite stick" is used to apply pressure
from the opposing tooth and stretch the band slightly for a secure fit.

Although there are only four bands, this step in the process can take the
longest, approximately 20 minutes, because it is important that the fit be
precise. We find that children are sometimes reluctant to bite and, of
course, it takes much longer in those situations.
